Innledning
Mr. Utterson, a reputable lawyer, was accompanied by his cousin and best friend, Mr. Enfield, during one of their evening walks in the city streets.

As they strolled along, Mr. Enfield recounted a bizarre tale to Mr. Utterson. In the wee hours of the morning, Mr. Enfield witnessed a little girl frantically running while being chased by a man who was walking leisurely.

However, the man carelessly trampled the girl after she fell to the ground. Shocked and appalled, Mr. Enfield immediately pursued the man while the doctor and the child's family arrived on the scene.

They demanded that the man provide them with compensation to avoid scandal, and the man agreed to pay up.

However, Mr. Enfield was suspicious of the man's identity, as he used the name Hyde and had a cheque with a well-known name on it.

He accompanied the man to the bank, where the man was able to cash the cheque despite using the name Hyde.

Utdrag
After a few more months had passed, Mr. Utterson had a chance encounter with Dr. Lanyon, who was a close friend of both Mr. Utterson and Dr. Jekyll.

Unfortunately, Dr. Lanyon was extremely ill and passed away shortly thereafter. Before he died, he revealed to Mr. Utterson that he had severed ties with Dr. Jekyll permanently, but refused to disclose the reason for their falling out.

Upon Dr. Lanyon's death, Mr. Utterson received a letter containing an envelope that read, "Not to be opened until the death or disappearance of Dr. Jekyll." This was the same phrase that was included in Dr. Jekyll's will.

As time went on, Mr. Utterson attempted to visit Dr. Jekyll, but was continuously rebuffed by the doctor. One day, Dr. Jekyll's butler, Poole, approached Mr. Utterson with concerns about his employer.

Poole claimed that something was not right with Dr. Jekyll and requested that Mr. Utterson accompany him to the cabinet where Dr. Jekyll had locked himself away.

Upon hearing a strange voice from the cabinet and observing unusual behavior, Mr. Utterson and Poole became convinced that the person inside was not Dr. Jekyll, but his alter ego, Mr. Hyde - a notorious murderer who was wanted by the police.
