Innledning
The prevailing ideology at Camp Green Lake, the setting of the story, is one of punishment and hard labor. The camp is situated in a desolate desert where a beautiful lake once existed.

The arid location was formerly a vibrant village that boasted of peace and prosperity. Folklore and onion remedies, combined with modern medical care, were used to maintain the health of the inhabitants.

Stanley was wrongly accused of stealing a precious pair of shoes that were intended for a homeless shelter, which led to his detention at Camp Green Lake.

Utdrag
When Stanley tries to retrieve his family's inheritance from the desert, the headman steals it from him.

The suitcase is marked with his name, symbolizing that it belongs to him and that the money belongs to the people who worked for it, not the few who control the world.

When the principal tries to take it back, Ms. Moregano stops her. Moregano stops her. Ms. Ms. Moregano appears as an angel who comes out of nowhere and saves the day.

She helps Stanley get the suitcase back and takes him and Zero home. This could perhaps symbolize a messiah coming to take power back to the people. When Stanley gets the suitcase back, he becomes even more heroic.

The conflict between the boys is similar to Lord of the Flies. The most cunning boy leads the pack, and it shows how the anarchic system of the human brain develops when civilization and child rearing are not present. This is evident when the boys line up for water.

X-Ray, the leader of the gang, is first in line and the others follow, with Stanley and Zero at the back. He shows his power when he forces the others to give him what they have found so that he can take the rest of the day off.

The intrigue and jealousy between the boys is well portrayed when Stanley teaches Zero to read, while Zero helps Stanley dig his hole. X-Ray doesn't like anyone having it easier than him, so to prove his leadership, he starts a fight with Stanley.
