Innledning
Louis Sachar, a renowned author, once wrote a book in 1998 entitled "Holes" and published by Frances Foster Books.

This 233-page book tells the story of a boy who was once considered a bad apple but transformed into a hero through a unique experience.

As the famous quote goes, "If a mischievous boy is made to dig a hole every day under the blazing sun, it will turn him into a good boy."

Utdrag
Stanley's arrival at Camp Green Lake marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life. Upon his arrival, he encountered Mr. Sir, who imparted the camp's guiding principle to him: "If you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun, it will turn him into a good boy."

This was the foundation upon which Camp Green Lake was built. Stanley had anticipated a typical summer camp experience, but he quickly realized that the reality was vastly different.

Instead of carefree summer activities, the juvenile delinquents at Camp Green Lake were required to dig holes that were five feet deep and five feet wide under the scorching sun. This grueling activity was meant to build their characters and serve as punishment for their crimes.

Stanley was assigned to Block D, where he met his new friends: X-Ray, Armpit, Zigzag, Magnet, Squid, and Zero.

Each juvenile in Block D had their own status and set of rules, and Stanley quickly learned that if he wanted to survive his time in detention, he would need to follow their lead. On his first day of digging, Stanley discovered that X-Ray was the leader of "Gang D."

The heat was unbearable as the boys toiled away in the dry lakebed. A water truck arrived each day to provide the boys with some relief, but they had to line up for their turn to drink. X-Ray always positioned himself at the front of the line, while Zero was always at the back.

Stanley wondered why X-Ray always referred to himself by that name and assumed it was due to his glasses, which were constantly caked in dirt.

As the days passed, Stanley uncovered a golden tube with the initials KB carved into it. Mr. Pendanski had informed Stanley that if he found anything significant in his hole, he should report it to either Mr. Sir or Mr. Pendanski, and he would be rewarded with a day off and an extra shower.

However, Stanley opted to give the tube to X-Ray because X-Ray had previously promised to do the same for him. X-Ray explained that he deserved the day off and extra shower more than Stanley did because he had been at the camp for almost a year.

This made Stanley suspicious about the real purpose behind the digging, and he began to wonder if they were searching for something specific.
