Innledning
My topic of interest is the fishing industry, specifically focusing on the challenges faced by fishermen working on large vessels in the frigid waters of the Bering Sea.
While the occupation of a fisherman varies greatly depending on location, I will concentrate on the unique experiences of these seafarers who spend months at a time in isolation, battling harsh weather conditions and enduring physical and mental strain.
To gain a better understanding of the life of a Bering Sea fisherman, we must first paint a picture of the typical fisherman.
For those who have watched the popular TV series "The Deadliest Catch" on Discovery Channel, the rugged and hardworking persona of these fishermen may come to mind.
However, for those unfamiliar with the show, I will provide a detailed explanation of their daily struggles and achievements.
Utdrag
The TV series gives an insight into the fishermen's hard work, pride and honesty. They put themselves in danger to give their families a good life, but we also get to see a cheerful and playful side of the fishermen.
We have also seen movies like "The Perfect Storm" and "Jason Bourne", but there is not much that shows their work ethic and life on board the boat.
But how realistic is this description of the average fisherman? I doubt they are as tough as the movies and series make them out to be.
Of course they have to be tough to survive at sea for so long, but the series perhaps gives a slightly too tough picture of the men who work on these boats (if it was as hectic and dangerous as it seems, they wouldn't need to film 24 boats to get enough clips for one season).
