Innledning
As we cruised towards the shore, I noticed Uncle George's boat just ahead of ours. As his boat approached the beach, a young Indian rushed over to help him pull the boat up on the sand.

I watched as Uncle George reached into his pocket and handed two cigars to the grateful helpers. Perhaps he thought they would appreciate a little something to help them unwind.

Interestingly enough, cigars are often touted as having a calming effect on people, but my dad, being a doctor, is not a fan of smoking.

Utdrag
Dad and Uncle George led the way, and the two Indian men and I followed closely behind. As they leaned over me to get a better view inside the shanty, I realized just how tall they both were.

The sound of a woman's scream filled the air just as we entered, and it was evident that she was in significant pain.

The room was filled with several older women who were doing their best to provide comfort and assistance to the woman in labor. She lay in the lower bunk of the bed, covered with a quilt, while the room was filled with a putrid odor.

I couldn't tell if it was due to the woman being in labor for two days straight, or if it was her husband lying in the upper bunk smoking a pipe.

Speaking of her husband, he had injured his leg three days prior, and it looked pretty severe with lots of yellow fluid present.

Dad ordered a woman to heat up some water and in the meantime he spoke to me.

“This lady is going to have a baby, Nick,” he said.

“I know,” I said. That fact was pretty obvious.

"Trust me, you don't understand," explained my father. "What she's experiencing right now is known as labor.

The baby is ready to enter the world, and the mother is eager for it to happen as well. Every muscle in her body is working to make it possible, which is why you hear her screaming."
