Innledning
Ask yourself, what drives people to work hard? Where does the determination come from? What causes us to want to make something of our lives?

The questions can be answered with to words hope and expectation. These two words are prominent themes in the novel

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian. The main character Junior explores these questions, through the power of hope, and expectations.

Utdrag
This just proves how little hope the reservation really has, and in my opinion the lack of hope results in substance abuse issues and poverty.

To further support my point, that the reservation has no hope, we can see a quote from Junior where he said” But we reservation Indians don’t get to realize our dreams.

We do not get those chances. Or Choices. We are just poor. That all we are”. (page 13) He shows with this quote, how there is no hope left on the reservation.

People on the reservation feel like they do not have the same opportunities as everyone else, that is why they have lost hope.

The lack of hope, results in negative effects like poverty and drug abuse.

Finally, these people have lack of determination and drive because it hasn’t been any major expectations on the Native Americans, because people underestimate them.

If they had high expectations they could have tried to do something productive and good with their lives.

This lack of expectations causes so many problems that the book shows with Native people on the reservation.

These unlucky people have their determination, drive and willing to get out of the cycle of poverty and alcoholism, because of this lack of high expectations.

We can see at the end of the book, when Junior is reflecting on the memories he has had and the dreams that he wanted to pursue, he says” the reservations were meant to be prisons, you know?

Indians were meant to move onto reservations and die.” This is a over exaggeration of the already terribly life-styles Indians are forced to live on reservations, but this quote must some extend truth to it.
