‘The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian’ | Analytical essay

Ask yourself, what drives people to work hard? Where does the determination come from? What causes us to want to make something of our lives?

The questions can be answered with to words hope and expectation. These two words are prominent themes in the novel

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian. The main character Junior explores these questions, through the power of hope, and expectations.

This just proves how little hope the reservation really has, and in my opinion the lack of hope results in substance abuse issues and poverty.

To further support my point, that the reservation has no hope, we can see a quote from Junior where he said” But we reservation Indians don’t get to realize our dreams.

We do not get those chances. Or Choices. We are just poor. That all we are”. (page 13) He shows with this quote, how there is no hope left on the reservation.

People on the reservation feel like they do not have the same opportunities as everyone else, that is why they have lost hope. The lack of hope, results in negative effects like poverty and drug abuse.
