What does diversity mean to you?
The struggle of equality – BLM, LGBTQ+, and #MeToo

Utdrag
The concept of diversity is broad and for each individual to define themselves. However, I think diversity is mainly centered around acceptance of others.

Acceptance of others who might be alike or different than yourself. Diversity to me is the quality of including other individuals, whether they are from dissimilar ethnic and/ or social backgrounds, of different race, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies.

Diversity should challenge people to respect and tolerate others as well as learn for each other. Diversity should be a way to make life more exciting and interesting. By for example meeting people who encourages you to challenge and expand your world view.

People with completely different life experiences should be able to come together and share what they have learned, as well as learn from each other.

Throughout the last few years, there have been several different movements and protests. Majority of these movements have been centered around social equality.

Social equality is a state where people within a specific society are treated equally, along with equal rights, liberties, and status.

Some of the biggest movements have been Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ+, and #MeToo. These movements will be discussed in this text.

One group of people who have been fighting for their freedom, as well as equal rights and recognition are African Americans.

African Americans have been exposed to segregation, discrimination, racism, and oppression. Throughout history dark- skinned people have been treated as less worthy, due to their skin color.

For instance, the historical event Apartheid. Apartheid was a system of segregation and discrimination aimed toward race, which lasted from 1948 until the early 1990s (Britannica, 2020).

This system had huge impact regarding the development of Black history and culture. Even though the end of apartheid was supposed to be a new beginning for all affected, many people still have a negative view of African Americans.

The fight African Americans have had to go through is well illustrated in the Small Axe series, directed by Steve McQueen (NRK, 2020).

The series contains five episodes that explains and shows the challenging battle African Americans have been, and still are going through.
