Task Two

Utdrag
“I pledge alliance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

This is the American pledge of alliance. Should all immigrants to English-speaking countries pledge alliance?

The English-speaking world is large. It consists of among other countries: the United States of America, the United Kingdom and Australia.

These countries have many opportunities they offer to immigrants, but on the other hand, these countries also have done a fair share to stop immigration altogether or they have not treated everybody with liberty and justice.

Two of the biggest English-speaking countries are the USA and the United Kingdom. These countries also have the best schools in the world such as Harvard, the University of Oxford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In many developing countries you are not even guaranteed an education. Especially if you are a girl, there are many countries in the world where girls are not even allowed to go to school.

According to UNESCO, there are 110 million children that cannot go to school, and 60 percent are girls.1 Instead of going to school, they must stay home and clean, cook, and take care of the family.

Therefore, the immigrants that are lucky enough to escape from countries like this to one of the English-speaking countries, should be thankful for the opportunities the country is giving their children.

In these countries, they receive much more liberty and justice than in the country they emigrated from. The USA is the country in the world that has welcomed the most immigrants. In total, they have received 50,6 million immigrants.

Canada on the other hand has only welcomed 8,05 million immigrants.2 These two countries are around the same size; therefore, they have room to welcome around the same amount of people.

However, this is not the case. The USA should be admired by countries all over the world for its ability to welcome immigrants.

The USA was formally known as the country of opportunities, and millions of people all over the world fled here for work opportunities and cheaper and more land. There is no other country where you have as many opportunities as in the USA.
