Utdrag
Laura is an extremely shy young woman who rarely talks to anyone other than her family. She is disabled and therefore has no self-esteem.

She can't imagine that any decent man would want to marry her. The most important things in Laura's life are some old records that belonged to her father and her collection of glass figurines.

Despite her withdrawn and insecure nature, Laura has a deep sense of love for these objects and caring for them gives her some comfort in an otherwise challenging everyday life.

Amanda is unhappy with how her life has turned out. When she was young, she had male admirers who came to visit every day.

She loves to tell stories from her youth. At the time, she was a wealthy young woman who thought she would live happily ever after.

But fate willed it differently. The man she chose left her, and she had to take care of the children all by herself. Now the only thing she wants is for her daughter to get married.

Amanda wants Laura to marry, but no suitors seem forthcoming. Therefore, she persuades Tom to invite one of his colleagues home for dinner.

Jim O'Connor accepts the invitation and shows up at Wingfield's apartment. What they don't know is that Laura and Jim went to the same high school, and that Laura had a crush on him at the time.

When Jim arrives, and Laura sees who it is, she doesn't want to talk to him. Jim doesn't recognize Laura at first, but when they start talking, he remembers her.
