Utdrag
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas was written by John Boyne and published in 2007. The Irish novelist has written seventeen novels for both adults and young readers.
The story of the forbidden friendship between a Jewish prisoner in Auschwitz and the son of a Nazi commandant stands out of all his work.
The book has sold more than seven million copies and reached first place on the New York Times bestseller list.
One year after it was published, the book was adapted into a film. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is not based on a true story, but Boyne took inspiration from the fact that the commandant of Auschwitz did bring his family to live near the concentration camp.
The title refers to the camp inmates’ striped uniforms. I enjoyed reading this book because of its powerful concept.
The gruesome topic is told through the point of view of a young boy called Bruno. Boyne does a brilliant job with the voice of the little, innocent boy. If you start reading this book, you will go on a journey with Bruno that you won´t forget.

Bruno – the Son of the Nazi Commandant
The main character of the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a nine-year-old boy called Bruno.
He is very small for his age and has a big interest in art and books. He lives with parents, his older sister Gretel and maids.
In the first chapter of the book Bruno says, “No one needed Gretel much because she was a Hopeless Case”.
It tells us that the siblings are not close to each other. Bruno has a wild imagination and loves to explore.
In general, he follows his parent’s strict rules, but he occasionally breaks them to go on adventures.
Bruno´s father has a stern personality which makes him feel intimidated. From a young age Bruno has been indoctrinated to believe that Germany is superior to all other countries.
Like his father, Bruno wants to become a soldier. Though Bruno knows the importance of treating others with respect and politeness, he still struggles with his tendency to be naïve and sheltered.
