Innledning
In the movie “The Hate U Give”, we follow the 16-year-old Starr Carter who faces the problem of living in two cultures.

She lives in a poor African American neighbourhood but goes to a white suburban school. In this text, I will talk about Starr and how she faces her problems.

Police violence has been and is a big problem especially in the USA. Early in the movie we can see Starr in a car with her childhood friend Khalil. They had just run away from a party where gunshots were fired.

Utdrag
When Starr was a kid, she was in a “harry potter gang” with Khalil and her other best friend. Her first best friend (a girl) passed away at a very young age, and Khalil passed away at 16-17 years old.

To deal with that type of pain is something that can’t be imagined by others. I have never felt anything like that, but I know the day will come at that day will be very hard.

The grief of loosing someone you care about is not something to joke about. As mentioned before, Starr goes to a White suburban school while living in an African American neighbourhood.

The neighbourhood was the only place Starr really felt at home. She had friends from her school, and a boyfriend, but they didn’t know how it felt for her going to that school “Williamson”.

In one scene, a girl from her school almost “defends” the police officer who shot and killed Khalil. Starr snapped at her and was angry.

I do understand both the perspectives here. Starr is a black teenager who lost her best friend to an act which I consider racism.

The friend from school only sees the side the media shows because she doesn’t know how its like to experience racism.

Therefore, its hard to see both sides and that’s a part of the problem considering the police brutality against black people.

You should never give up If we look at the whole story “The Hate U Give”, we see all the pain that Starr has been through.
