Contrary to popular belief, "James and the Giant Peach" was not the beginning of Roald Dahl's writing career.

During World War II, Dahl spent a few months stationed in Washington D.C. It was there that he met a journalist who encouraged him to write about his experiences as a soldier.

Dahl took up the challenge, and after a couple of weeks, he submitted his piece to the journalist. The journalist was so impressed that he replied with a letter saying, "Did you know that you were a writer?

I haven't changed a single word." The anonymous piece, titled "Shot Down Over Libya," was published in the Saturday Evening Post and became a huge success.

Following the war, Roald Dahl began his literary journey by crafting short stories aimed at an adult audience.

During the 1960s, Roald Dahl became a father and began entertaining his children with captivating bedtime stories.
