Guns have made a significant change in society with entering American pop culture, through movies, music and sports.
The pop culture has made gun ownership into a display of status in society through western, crime and gangster movies.
These, amongst many others, have contributed to the idea that owning a gun in the United States is a standardized norm, as well as a display of status and superiority.
Guns can play an important role in many suburban societies, but also create many unnecessary disputes.
However, the ownership and usage in the United States has amplified the last few years, creating a big gap between what guns symbolize and should be used for, and what they´re realistically being used for.
This gap has led to many gun violence incidents, with many injured or killed. Gun violence is the violation of the main purpose of the Second Amendment in the U.S. Constitution, which is to use the gun as self-defense;
“A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” (Legal Information Institute , Unknown).
To this day, the number of mass shootings across the U.S. in 2019 has outnumbered the amount of days in this year (Silverstein, 2019).
Gun violence is a daily tragedy than affects human lives around the world. An affected person can be anyone, but many situations impact different communities with people of color, women or other minority groups in society.
The mere presence of a gun of firearms can make you feel threatened, and cause severe psychological effects, like “PTSD” – Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Easy access to these guns and firearms is one of the main reasons for gun violence in American today.
