Mohandas Karamachand Gandhi, the youngest of three sons of Putalibai and Karamchand Gandhi, was born in 1869 in the state of Gujarat, located in the western part of India.
He was born into the second-highest caste, a social class system where people are born into a specific caste and remain in it for their entire lives.
According to Hinduism, if a person's behavior aligns with religious rules, they move up to a higher caste in their next life.
Conversely, if they fail to follow the rules, they move down to a lower caste. People who are not part of any caste are referred to as the "Untouchables". Today, the house where Gandhi was born is known as "Kirti Mandir".
During Gandhi's birth, India was under British control and had been a colony of Britain for hundreds of years. The British exploitation of India resulted in extreme poverty for many of its citizens.
Gandhi attended Porbander primary school and later, Albert High School in Rajkot. Though he was not particularly exceptional in his studies, he did have a strong respect for his teachers.
He was not interested in sports and often kept to himself, rarely socializing with others. Even though he had access to books at school, he did not read extensively and never copied answers from his classmates.
When he was 13 years old, he entered an arranged wedding with Kasturbai Makanji started her life with Gandhi as a playful relationship, but it soon turned sour as Gandhi became a possessive and jealous husband. Despite Kasturbai's illiteracy, Gandhi tried to mold her into his ideal wife.
Gandhi's strong attachment to his elder brother Laxmidas was evident from a young age. After their father's death, Laxmidas played a significant role in Gandhi's education and even sent him to study law in London.
Before leaving for England, Gandhi promised his mother that he would lead a simple and humble life. In 1891, he was accepted into The Inner Temple and later became a barrister.
During his time in London, Gandhi actively worked for the London Vegetarian Society. In 1891, Gandhi arrived in India and soon after, he journeyed to South Africa to take on a case.
