Every symbol in the book is important for the simple reason that they each play a crucial role in the book.

The essay will discuss the symbols, their meaning and significance as well as why the changing of the symbol are significant too the novel. How does the symbols help us see the change from civilization to savagery?

Utdrag
The first major symbol in the book is the conch shell, it especially important for the meetings that the boys have on the island since it is what they use as a sign to summon the boys when they are arranging meetings.

The conch is also a symbol of civilization and order since it is used to gather the boys.

Furthermore, it is also used for the purpose of speaking, the person that is holding the conch has the right to speak and the others are in theory supposed to be quiet and listen to the one with the conch, in this way the conch is more than just a symbol it is also a sign of political lawfulness and democratic strength.

On one side the conch is a vessel for more bullying of Piggy, because it gives the boys a way to undermine Piggy by not letting him be heard all the time when he has the conch.

Glasses are for those with a bad sight, but they are often looked at as an accessory for smart people. Lord of the flies has one person who use glasses, Piggy, and he is also sort of an outsider in the novel.

The glasses help the reader to see that Piggy is the smartest and logical one in the group, and the glasses represents the forcefulness of science and intellectual attempt in society.

When they use Piggy’s glasses to make a fire at the beginning of the book we see that symbolical significance.
