The major conflict is the struggle between Ralph and Jack. Both wants to be leaders. Ralph was picked to be leader.
Ralph symbolizes a peaceful democracy. Jack symbolizes a violent dictatorship. Both have leadership qualities.
Jack accepts Ralph´s leadership at first but as their rivalry grows, they start fighting.
Ralph represents respect for the law, duty, reason, and the protection of the weak. Jack represents violence, cruelty, mob rule, government through fear, and tyranny.

Characters
Ralph: Representative of order, civilization, productive leadership.
Democracy. Ralph is trustworthy in the beginning of the novel and cares for everyone. Gradually as the group turns more savage, Ralph loses more and more trust and power. Jack gains more followers.
Jack: Representative of violence, savagery, desire for power. Jack loses the election of who is going to be chief. He gets mad.
He pushes the boundaries and the rules. He talks without the conch in his hands. He gets obsessed with hunting. He paints his face like a barbarian, and he is bloodthirsty.
Simon: Representative of spiritual human, goodness that is deeply connected with nature. The way that we understand he is deeply connected with nature is because he goes for walks alone in the jungle and finds a place in the jungle I goes to when he wants some alone time and peace.
He shows his goodness and caring when he helps the littluns to get fruit from trees and he is also the only one that helps Ralph with building shelters.
Simon is the only one to value mortality. He understands that the problem with the beast and the lord of the flies is that it’s not real, rather a savagery that lurks with in every human being. Simon´s death represents overwhelming abundance of evil.

Symbols
The conch shell becomes a powerful symbol of democracy, civilization, and order.
Piggy´s glasses are a symbol of science, intellectual. Signal fire is the boys only connection to the civilization. It’s the only way they can get rescued.
Early in the book when the boys want to be rescued, the fire is strong. But when the fire goes out, we realize that the boys have lost desire to be rescued. Therefore, symbolizes the signal fire hope and life.
The beast is a symbol of the instinct of savagery that exist within all humans. The more savage the boys get, the more real the beast gets.
