Social media is gaining more and more time in the everyday lives of most of us. It is not only the use that has increased, however the functions on the social platforms have also developed in recent years.
This is something we benefit from in our lives. For many, social media can be important for who they are and who they grow up to be.
This also applies to our health and life skills. How does social media really affect our health and the way we master life?
According to Store norske leksikon, social media is described as "Websites and apps that facilitate the creation and sharing of content, and to participate in social networks.
In today's society, social media is used for, among other things, communication, news dissemination, marketing and entertainment.

Social media can also have the opposite effect, which help to reinforce loneliness. Forskning.no refers to a study from the University of Pittsburgh which tells us that there is a connection between how much time we spend on social media and how lonely we are.
They found that those who spent more than two hours on social media daily had twice the risk of feeling lonely, as those who spent less than half an hour.
In recent years, these social platforms have developed a lot, with constantly new tools and features. On Snapchat, it is now possible to have an overview of where all your friends are through a digital map.
Instagram has a similar function where you can “tag” the friends who are in a photo you post. In this way, loneliness is amplified for those who are not invited or included.
For many, even unrealistic role models are difficult to avoid on social media. We see a lot of media personalities with great influence, so-called influencers.
Many of these are portrayed as “perfect”. On Instagram and Snapchat, we get insight into people who have everything in order - their big house, their perfect girlfriend, and their flawless body.
For many, it is difficult to see through this facade, and they therefore begin to compare themselves with these unrealistic role models. Comparing oneself with such people can give us false hopes for the way we ourselves should manage our lives.
