Characterization of Lucy
Lucy exudes a rebellious aura, evident by her detention for striking Penny Jones (p. 34, ll. 23-29).
Despite her intellectual prowess, being one of the brightest students at the school with nine O levels (p. 34, l. 37), Lucy's heart underwent a transformation upon meeting Bethan, a girl who seemingly exerts a negative influence on her.
Formerly a grade A student (p. 36, ll. 13-15), Lucy's friendship with Penny dissolved due to Bethan's interference (p. 35, ll. 3-6).
While she doesn't harbor hatred for Penny (p. 34, l. 44), Lucy feigns animosity in front of Bethan, concealing her true feelings.
Furthermore, she holds a strong aversion to Simon Parle, her detention companion, even though Bethan might take pride in their association with a rebellious and mischievous boy (p. 34, ll. 17-18). Yet, Lucy finds Parle's behavior "disgusting" (p. 33, l. 9).
Lucy's mother strongly opposes her friendship with Bethan, something Lucy contemplates. She remains torn between her desire to be Bethan's friend and the relief she feels when her mother prohibits the association.
Consequently, Lucy appears malleable, easily influenced by Bethan's sway. Her talent for drawing shines through, and she confidently wears brown eyeliner at school, despite her mother's disapproval of makeup.
