Kapittel 1:
One day, Sadie meets Kevin by chance on the street. Sadie is Protestant and Kevin is Catholic and both live in the capital of Northern Ireland, Belfast. It's been about three years since they last saw each other.

They have a cup of coffee together and talk about their families and what has happened in their lives since then. Kevin works in the scrap metal business, while Sadie works in a hat department.

They go for a walk up to Cave Hill, but on the way they meet Linda Mullet, Sadie's old school friend, and Tommy, Sadie's brother's girlfriend. Linda resents the two of them hanging out together because Kevin is Catholic and Sadie is Protestant.

Kapittel 2:
Linda visits Tommy at the Jackson home, where Sadie lives, and tells Sadie's parents that she saw Sadie and Kevin together. They don't like it, especially Sadie's parents.

Three summers ago, Sadie and Tommy became involved with Kevin and his sister, Brede. Afterwards they became friends, but had to separate because it was too difficult to stay together due to the fact that they were both Catholics and Protestants. Mrs. Jackson was very upset and thought that Sadie would lead them into trouble.

Kapittel 3:
At the McCoys' house, where Kevin lives: Mrs. McCoy is worried because Kevin hasn't come home yet, but Brede, one of Kevin's many sisters, calms her down.

Uncle Albert comes to visit. Brede goes to visit Kate, but runs into Brian and argues with him. The Prov(isionals) were a splinter group of the IRA who believed that they could only achieve a united Ireland through violence.

Kapittel 4:
Kevin and Sadie are at Cave Hill. Afterwards, Sadie meets some friends from her work, but they don't like Kevin because he is a "Mick" (= a Catholic).

Kevin and Sadie argue about the differences in the number of children in their families, but they become friends again. They walk hand in hand on the way home.

Kapittel 5:
Mrs. Mullet visits Mrs. Jackson, but doesn't like her. Mr. Jackson and Mr. Mullet are at a meeting of the Orange Lodge. Mrs. Mullet tries to get Tommy and Linda married, but Mrs. Jackson doesn't want to. Mrs. Mullet criticizes Sadie for seeing Kevin - Linda told her.

Linda and Tommy are in a cafe, they meet Steve, Tommy's friend, who is interested in Sadie. Sadie doesn't like him, but he doesn't know that. Steve tells Linda and Tommy that he has joined the Lodge. He tries to convince Tommy to join too, but Tommy doesn't want to.
