A short summary of the novel
After three years, Sadie and Kevin are reunited and quickly become close friends.
However, their parents are opposed to their friendship due to their religious differences: Sadie is a Protestant and Kevin is a Catholic. As a result, many people in their community have strong opinions about their relationship.
Initially, Sadie's brother and Kevin's sister are supportive of their relationship despite the religious divide. However, as they witness the negative impact it has on their siblings, they begin to question their stance.
The situation becomes even more complicated as rumors spread among their neighbors and friends, causing some to turn their backs on Sadie and Kevin.
Kevin and Sadie are experiencing a string of unfortunate events, with everything seemingly going wrong for them.
However, their luck takes a turn when they unexpectedly run into Sadie's former geography teacher. He warmly welcomes them into his home and allows them to spend time together there.
As Sadie begins to work for him, she discovers a new circle of friends among her teacher and his friendly neighbors.
This novel portrays the challenging reality of living in a world plagued with divisive barriers. Sadie and Kevin, both in love but from different religious backgrounds, experience firsthand the difficulties of navigating a society that harbors hate towards those who don't share their beliefs.
Their relationship causes tensions to rise, resulting in the destruction of walls at Sadie's home as well as Mr. Blake's house, with threatening drawings.
Kevin is the victim of multiple attacks, and they both lose their jobs due to their relationship. Even their few remaining friends are targeted, and Kevin faces false accusations and is almost imprisoned for possessing a gun that did not belong to him.
This is a narrative of two young individuals navigating the challenges of their time. Kevin and Sadie's love for each other is put to the test as they face a world filled with hatred and discrimination based on religious beliefs.
They must make a difficult decision: should they surrender their love and conform to society's expectations or stand up for what they believe in?
As they grapple with this question, they realize that they are not alone in their struggle, and that their actions will have consequences beyond their personal lives.
In a time where their choices are limited and their future uncertain, they must find the courage to make the right decision.
