English is all around us. In music, on tv-shows, games, communication and a lot more.
Over 1.3 billion people are native English speakers, and almost everyone in the world speaks at least some basic English. (Statista 2021) But why is English a global language?
A lot of the English language came from the French and Latin origin and was usually connected to religion.
English has been influenced by many other languages for over 1500 years. Before English was changed, the British spoke a language called “Celtic”, Which are todays Scottish and Welsh Gaelic.

English is the dominant language in science, technology, academic studies and publications. If you want a higher education in another country, you will probably speak English at your new school.
This is because English has become a Lingua Franca, and that means English is an international communication language.
This has made it easier for people in different countries to communicate with each other.
If you work at an international company, you probably must know how to speak English, because you will have to communicate with others.

English is a global language because of the colonization that the brits did in the 16th century.
The British Empire made the English language spread all over the world, and now millions of people speak it every day.
