Tom Cruise Mapother IV ble født 3. juli 1962 i New York. Hans far, Thomas Cruise Mapother III, født i 1934, var en elektrisk ingeniør ansatt hos General Electric.

Hans mor, Mary Lee Pfeiffer, er en pensjonert lærer. Toms foreldre giftet seg i Louisville i 1957 etter å ha møtt hverandre på University of Kentucky.
