The climax in "The Outsiders" is certainly a pivotal moment, but it's not the only one. The gang's world is turned completely upside down when Johnny dies due to a heroic act by Pony, Johnny, and Dally.
While saving children from a burning church, the roof collapses on Johnny and he is taken to the hospital with a broken neck.
Sadly, Johnny passes away from his injuries and Dally has a breakdown, resulting in him being killed by the police in front of the whole gang.
However, the novel's ending is truly remarkable. Ponyboy is failing English, but he has a chance to pass if he comes up with a good semester theme.
He decides to write an essay about everything he has experienced in the past few days. Starting the essay in the same way the book started, the novel ends up being the essay that Ponyboy writes in the end.
