Task 1 – Short Answer
First, Yovanovitch outlines the intent of the paper, which is to clarify to the future of the United States what the events of the past year mean.
She starts by sharing her family and their values with some personal information. She and her family were refugees who, in the expectation of a better life in democracy, arrived in America. All must be a defender of human rights, Yovanovitch claims.
In comparing the American state with nations under tyranny, the message then builds on this notion.
The author expresses her hope that the United States will not become a place where, at the cost of the well-being and rights of citizens, people allow the government to misuse power. The author encourages the readers to stand up for their beliefs and be active members of society to this effect.
The article ends by urging people to support their democratic institutions. The author claims that democracy can prevail only by doing so.
"The intent of the "These are turbulent times" post. "But we will persist and prevail" is to encourage readers to become engaged people who are not afraid of their government taking a stand against corruption.
To express her points, Marie L. Yovanovitch uses several language features and literary devices.
Emotive Language
To express the importance of democracy, the speaker uses optimistic terms and phrases.
"For example, "honor", "a leap of confidence and hope", "prosperity”, "resilient", or "precious. All these terms are intended to reassure readers that democracy, which is meant to be preserved, is something of importance.
To create a distinction between the ideal state of democracy and the unwanted result of not protecting democratic ideals, the speaker then uses derogatory terms and phrases.
For e.g., "blind”, "threatened", "shocking", "malicious plots", or "hollowed out". The difference between a democratic state and a dictatorship is highlighted by these words and phrases.
Most of the words can be related to personal well-being, thus expressing the message that in a democracy, people can live much better than in a dictatorship (Literary Devices, 2020).
Personification
To highlight the negative effects of failing to speak out against wrongdoings by officials, the author uses personification.
The institutions that "protect us from individual transgressors" also need security, or "they will be hollowed out over time, unable to serve and protect our nation”.
