Historical background
During the late 19th century, prostitution was a prevalent profession in the East End of London, with an estimated 55,000 prostitutes in the city, equating to one prostitute for every 12 men.
Despite being legal, there were not many brothels in the area, but instead men could find prostitutes in some rooming houses.
The majority of the women were in their twenties and many were infected with sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis and gonorrhea. Some prostitutes who survived their illnesses would eventually leave the profession, settle down, and even marry former clients.
The Murders
In the span of just three months, from August to November 1888, a series of gruesome murders took place that shook the city of London to its core. According to reports in The Star newspaper at the time, "No murder was ever more brutally done."
The Ripper became notorious for his brutal techniques, which involved strangling the women he targeted, slitting their throats and mutilating their bodies. He would also remove organs and body parts from some of his victims after killing them on the streets.
