Innledning
In every corner of the world, the upbringing of children stands as a cherished and paramount experience.

However, the specific roles of mothers and fathers vary significantly from one country to another, shaped by environmental influences, religious beliefs, personal convictions, and prevailing notions of leadership.

Traditionally, mothers assumed the nurturing responsibilities at home, while fathers shouldered the weight of providing for the family by engaging in various forms of work to secure money, food, and shelter.

In modern times, these roles have become more fluid, with a growing interchangeability. Nonetheless, the desire for paternal acceptance remains deeply rooted in the hearts of sons, often leading to a lifelong pursuit of bonding with their fathers.

The intricacy of this process emerges when masculinity becomes a defining factor in their identities, causing friction between the overpowering or overly protective father figure, the rebellious son, or their reluctance to express emotions other than anger.

Utdrag
Upon returning to the river for their journey back, the story reaches its climax when the father almost stumbles, and they find themselves trapped in the tumultuous waters.

The tension reaches its peak, leaving readers at the edge of their seats. As is characteristic of many short stories, "Crossing" concludes with an open ending, leaving the fate of the father and his son uncertain.

Will they survive? Will they succumb to the forces of nature? The story leaves these questions unanswered, allowing readers' imaginations to shape the conclusion.

The narrative structure can be broadly divided into three distinct phases: the initial part, set before the symbolic border of the river crossing, where both characters find solace and safety in human civilization.

The second phase occurs after the crossing, thrusting the father and son into the unpredictable embrace of mother nature, a realm fraught with danger and unforgiving challenges.

Finally, the story culminates as they start their return crossing, leading to the climax and the enigmatic open ending that leaves the characters' fate hanging in the balance.

At the inception of this enthralling short tale, we are introduced to its sole characters – a father and his son – whose names and ages remain shrouded in mystery.
