Innledning
"Jane Eyre," a literary masterpiece authored by Charlotte Brontë in the 19th century, tells the story of a young woman residing in England.
Raised by her aunt, Mrs. Reed, and three cousins, Jane's unfortunate fate of losing her parents as a baby led her uncle and aunt to take on the responsibility of her upbringing.
After Mr. Reed's demise, Jane's mistreatment by her cousins and the constant label of "the bad kid" in the household made her life even more challenging.
Utdrag
Upon Mr. Rochester's arrival home one night, Jane becomes unsettled by eerie sounds emanating from outside her room. The spine-chilling laughter sends shivers down her spine, leaving her petrified.
Seeking answers, Jane confides in Mrs. Fairfax the following morning. Mrs. Fairfax reveals the existence of a peculiar woman named Grace Poole, who also works at Thornfield. Mrs. Fairfax explains that Grace Poole wanders the corridors at night, yet the purpose of her wanderings remains a mystery.
Jane's fear escalates when she hears the unnerving laughter once again. Summoning her courage, she ventures out into the hallways to investigate. The sound of crackling fire urges her to hasten her pace towards Mr. Rochester's room. Upon entering the room, she discovers that his bed is engulfed in flames. Without a second thought, Jane quickly tries to rouse Mr. Rochester from his sleep. She locates a bucket of water and tosses it onto the bed, as they both work to extinguish the fire. Eventually, they manage to put out the fire, and Mr. Rochester gratefully thanks Jane for saving his life.
As the months pass by, Mr. Rochester extends invitations to his friends for a party at Thornfield. Amongst the guests is a captivating woman by the name of Blanche Ingram. Jane finds herself drawn to Blanche's charm and wit, but soon realizes that Blanche has developed feelings for Mr. Rochester.
While the party is underway, an uninvited guest, Mr. Mason, from the West Indies, arrives unexpectedly. Mr. Rochester appears to be familiar with him, yet there is an air of discomfort between them. Jane cannot help but feel intrigued by the mystery surrounding Mr. Mason's visit and wonders why he was not included in the guest list.
