Innledning
South Africa is a country with significant disparities between races and economic classes. Despite significant progress made in the 15 years since apartheid, there is still a notable difference in experience between being black or white in South Africa.
I am particularly interested in comparing the typical experiences of a black teenager in South Africa to those of a Norwegian teenager.
Utdrag
Based on my current understanding, I have a hypothesis that South African teenagers are generally more self-sufficient and resilient than their Norwegian counterparts.
Unlike Norwegian teenagers, who may have limited exposure to violence and hardship beyond what they see on screens, South African teenagers may have had to navigate challenging social circumstances and past traumas that require them to mature more quickly.
While I cannot say for certain whether this assumption is accurate, my initial research has led me to believe that there may be significant differences in the experiences of these two groups of teenagers.
There is a potential reality that Norwegian adolescents are being perceived as children for an extended period of time.
It seems that our society does not fully accept feelings of anger and pain, but suppressing these emotions will not make them vanish.
Norway currently holds the highest rate of teenage suicide globally, and it leaves us to ponder the reasons behind it.
It's not that South Africa has a superior social culture, as both cultures possess their own merits and drawbacks.
Social disparities exist between Norway and South Africa, with Norway having a significant material advantage.
In Norway, basic necessities like school, transportation, and school books are taken care of, which are everyday worries for many South Africans.
While Norwegians do not have to worry about having food on the table or basic healthcare needs, such concerns are commonplace for South Africans.
Additionally, Norwegian schools prioritize student health and safety, such that a school would close if fresh air levels in a classroom with a certain number of students fall below a certain threshold, whereas such concerns are not high on the priority list in South Africa.
