Innledning
In a faraway village, there lived a young lad named Askeladden who had set his heart on winning the heart of the king's daughter. Askeladden's brothers, Per and Pål, had already tried their luck with the princess but had failed miserably.

Despite their family's poverty, Askeladden was determined to make the journey to the kingdom with only a knife and some bread in his bag. With a heavy heart, he bid farewell to his parents and brothers and began his journey towards the castle.

Utdrag
Askeladden continued his journey and came across an old cottage. He knocked on the door and a wrinkled old woman answered. Askeladden politely asked for directions to the king's castle.

The woman replied, "I can show you the way, but first, could you spare me your knife and help me cut this bread?" Askeladden kindly obliged and helped her with the task.

The old woman then offered to let him spend the night, promising to wake him up early in the morning to guide him to the king's castle.
