Crotalus atrox, also known as the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, is a species of venomous snake that belongs to the viper family.
It is the second largest rattlesnake found in North America, with adult individuals typically measuring between 30 and 72 inches in length. However, the largest Western Diamondback ever recorded measured an impressive 87½ inches.

The Western Diamondback Rattlesnake boasts an impressively wide distribution range, with a highly varied habitat to match. While the snake can be found in lowland areas and prairies, it is also capable of inhabiting elevations of up to 5000 feet or more.
However, the species is predominantly found in rocky cliffs, desert regions, and the bottoms of canyons. Although it is not well-suited for swimming, there have been documented sightings of the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake in the ocean outside San Diego.
The Western Diamondback Rattlesnake engages in courtship and breeding from March through May, although there have been occasional reports of breeding occurring in the fall months as well.
During the summer, females typically give birth to six to twelve offspring, although on rare occasions the litter size can exceed twenty. At birth, the newborn snakes measure between nine and thirteen inches in length.
