During the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the pandemic dominated the media. At that time, it was challenging to know what was true and not.

One example of fake news stories about the virus is “The US government created the virus”. The Chinese government published a theory about the origins of the virus, where it said that it is an American disease that may have been introduced by some members of the US army.

This was published without any evidence, to support their theory. One other example was “Eating garlic prevents infection” lots of people on Facebook posted recommendations that eating garlic prevents infections.

Soon after a Chinese Newspaper reported a story about a woman that received treatment after eating 1,5 kg of raw garlic.

The WHO (The World health organization) was quick to respond by saying that there is no actual evidence that it can protect people.

These are just a few examples of fake news stories about the Covid-19 virus. Stories like this offered challenges and dangers to society, and because the virus was new at that time no one knew what was real or what was fake.

Humans are shockingly terrible at identifying fake news. Fake news is here to stay as we all know.
