The news comes as a shock and causes Louise to cry and run to her room. While in her room, Louise looks out of the window and sees the beauty of the new spring life outside, which reflects her own sense of newfound freedom.
Josephine, Louise's sister, tries to coax her out of the room but is unsuccessful. Eventually, Louise emerges and sees that her husband, Brently, is alive and well.
This twist in the plot causes Louise to die from shock. The doctors state that Louise died of joy, but as readers, we understand that she lost not only her newfound freedom but also her hope, ultimately leading to her untimely demise.
