Whenever we reach for hate, we remember the Titans. The American racial divide from times on slavery and as recent as 1964 is unimaginable today.

Challenges remain, but in 1964 the civil rights act was adopted giving all Americans regardless of race equal rights.

The camp that unified the races. Coach Boon took the football team for a two-weeklong camp. The goal was true team building across the divide.

Coach Boon forced team to ride the bus together, forced teammates to room across the racial divide and he forced them to learn details about the athletes and their families who did not have the same skin colour as themselves.

These measures worked out well and some of the athletes changed their biases.

Gerry for example thought less of coloured people, maybe due to the way he was raised.

However, Gerry overcame this and became best friends with his coloured teammate Julius.

This helped turn the team around as Gerry was one of the most vocal team members who did not want to play with coloured kids.

Becoming best friend with Julius, he showed that the racial divide was not an obstacle to becoming best friends nor against uniting the team.

The changes needed outside the team was not as easy and Gerry lost his girlfriend and a good friend because of his new friendship.

But he stood by his team even though key people in his life did not agree with him. The good people will adapt, and the bad people will regret.

When we look at progression of the movie, we can see that coach Boons had major obstacles and many doubters.

This was true even within his own coaching team. However, over the course of the movie, we see team members and assistant coach Yoast starting to believe in the team.
