Utdrag
The United States of America consists of six officially recognized races. Ethnicities from all corners of the world identify as Americans, and this is a result of the country’s history; for better or for worse.
Younger generations tend to think of the US as a country where people are no longer judged by their race, but unfortunately, racial bias is still a serious problem in the States.
“Orange is the New Black” brings the underlying racism in America to the surface. “Orange is the New Black” (OitNB) is packed with racial stereotypes and prejudices from the very first episode of the show, but episode 5 and 6 are particularly rich in them.
A stereotype is, as defined in the Cambridge Dictionary: “a set idea that people have about what someone or something is like, especially an idea that is wrong”.
Daya’s first flashback shows Hispanic stereotypes at their worst. Her mother, Aleida, is the “hot señorita” who is verbally aggressive and lacks work ethic.
Her boyfriend, Cesar, is the aggressive, unintelligent and sexual Latino. They have several children and are, of course, involved with drugs (Kohan, 2013, episode 5).
These stereotypes create significant prejudices all over the US, especially when it comes to employment. Ruta Yemane from the WZB Berlin Social Science Center has, in collaboration with several others, done a thorough research on Hispanic stereotypes in the labor market.
In her conclusion, she writes: “In the US, discrimination against Latinos is, above all, a male phenomenon, driven by the portrayal of Latino men as ‘threatening foreigners’. …
The discrimination against Latino men in the US disappears when they include information about their warm and friendly personality in the resume, which underscores that the discrimination they experience is mainly driven by employers’ stereotyping of Latino men as threatening and aggressive” (Yemane & Fernández-Reino, 2019).
They noticed the same stereotypes that Kohan portrayed in OitNB, which shows that the tv-series reflect reality when it comes to this.
Even more Hispanic stereotypes are shared in the next episode, where Morello knows everything about Hispanics because her neighborhood is near their neighborhood.
The Latino men like their women with big titties and big asses. Supposedly, they live 20 people to one apartment and have more kids than the Irish.
