Innledning
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, the son of Chief Henry Mandela of the Tembu Tribe, was born on July 18, 1918, in Treanskei, South Africa.

After completing his education at the University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand, he became a qualified lawyer in 1942.

Mandela's involvement with the African National Congress (ANC) began in 1944, where he actively participated in the movement against the apartheid policies of the National Party that ruled South Africa after 1948.

In 1956, he faced charges of treason and underwent a lengthy trial that lasted until 1961, where he was finally acquitted of all accusations.

In 1963, Nelson Mandela, alongside numerous leaders of the African National Congress and the Umkhonto we Sizwe, was arrested for alleged involvement in a plot to overthrow the government by violent means.

Mandela's stirring statement from the dock during the trial attracted significant international attention. Subsequently, on June 12, 1964, Mandela, along with eight other accused, was sentenced to life imprisonment.

From 1964 to 1982, he was held at Robben Island Prison, located off the coast of Cape Town, and was later moved to Pollsmoor Prison on the mainland.
