In the broadest sense imaginable, sustainability revolves around the capacity of something to persist and endure through time.

Over the past decade, sustainability has taken center stage as a globally intriguing subject. It has found its place in diverse conversations, spanning from casual grocery store chats to high-level United Nations meetings attended by some of the world's most influential individuals.

In the BBC News video titled 'Are Children Truly the Torchbearers of Tomorrow?', it's highlighted that 33% of adults aged 20-45 are contemplating refraining from parenthood due to concerns about climate change.

Back in 2014, Barack Obama articulated a different perspective on children's role in the context of climate change.

He emphasized that we must not consign our offspring and their descendants to a future they cannot mend.

During the same address, he touched upon our generation's unique position as the first to experience the impacts of climate change and the last with the capacity to enact meaningful change.

President Obama also underscored the United States' commitment to sustainable investments and their determined efforts to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the far-reaching consequences of global climate change.

Despite Barack Obama's 2014 commitment on behalf of the United States to aggressively reduce carbon emissions, reality took a different course.

In 2016, the transition from Obama to Donald Trump in the White House marked a significant shift. Under President Trump's leadership, the United States became the world's first nation to formally exit the Paris Climate Agreement, a move that raised eyebrows globally.

This accord, also known as COP21, saw major emitters pledging to curtail their emissions. The U.S. had previously committed to reducing emissions by 26-28% compared to 2005 levels by 2025, prior to Trump's withdrawal from the agreement.

When questioned about his decision to depart from climate agreements, Donald Trump cited his skepticism about climate change. In 2017, he even declared:

“climate change was created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive’’- something he later claimed was a joke.

Following Donald Trump's inauguration in 2017, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the United States saw a 3.48% increase, as reported by the World Development Indicators. However, the tide shifted when Trump's presidency ended in 2021, and Joseph Biden assumed office.
