Some Facts
- 7th largest in Asia
- 2nd largest in population with 1,366 milliarder
- official language is Hindi and English
- religion there is Hinduism and Muslims

Colonial History
- British colony 1600
- India became a very important jewel for the British colony
- mahatma Gandhi was a civil disobedience spiritual/political leader
- Nobel peace prize nominee
- he was the most respected leaders in the 1900
- he fought for freedom to coloured people
- tried giving India its independence, while in world war II
- got a promise from the British colony that if they helped them win the World war II, India would get its independence
- India became free in 1947
- it led to the partition of India
- now we have Pakistan where most Muslims live there and India where Hindus live
-terrible partition as it killed a lot of people
- 3 wars in 1947, 1965 and 1971, between the Hindus and Muslims
- arguing and having a conflict as to whom can own Kashmir
-Gujarat train blaze in 2002 was a big event where Muslims had killed 59 people on the train
- as the aftermath more than 1000 Muslims were killed
- 2007 Samhita express bombings it killed mostly people from Pakistan- 68
-Mumbai attacks in 2008- cause of bombing

Diversity and Poverty
- there are many ethnicity and backgrounds in India
- there is also a diversity in the religion there as there is 80% Hindu and 13% Muslims
- there are also some others as Christianity but in a smaller group
- there is a big difference between poor and rich there.
- the caste system is where people are born in their lifestyle
- it causes a lot of prejudice in India.
- people will know which cast you belong to by your last name
- it has gone as far as that the people had to protest it
- now it’s illegal to discriminate by cast
- population poverty is a subject that is important
- 37% are below the poverty line
- we are talking about extreme poverty as people living in slums
- in Dharia- Mumbai, there is placed more than 1 million people living in slums. and it sums up to the largest slum places
- what we mean by slums is that there is no access to clean water or any good place to live in
- many people get disease and get health problems they cannot do anything about
- 2 million children die every year caused by health problems caused by living in extreme poverty
- the chawl is an apartment building where a lot of families live there
