Subsequently, a trade war erupted, marked by tariffs on agricultural produce and goods such as steel and coal.
By the late '60s, the situation escalated into violence, prompting the erection of hard borders, walls, towers, and the deployment of heavy artillery and patrols by the UK military to secure the border.
This violence persisted for over three decades, resulting in the loss of 3,600 lives and became known as "The Troubles."

This historical context underscores the significance of the Irish border issue in Brexit negotiations and the delicate balance that must be maintained.
The complex history of Northern Ireland's relationship with the UK and the Republic of Ireland continues to shape the ongoing discussions and underscores the need for thoughtful solutions.
