Utdrag
The platypus is a fascinating and unique animal native to Australia, known for its strange combination of features from different species.
It is one of only two mammals in the world that lay eggs, the other being the echidna. The platypus is often referred to as the duckbill due to its broad, flat snout that resembles a duck's bill.
These aquatic creatures can be found living along streams in Australia, and have webbed feet and a broad, flat tail that helps them swim. Using its bill, the platypus is able to scoop up worms, small shellfish, and other prey from the bottom of streams.
Although they do not have teeth, adult platypuses can still crush their food. They typically grow to be between 41 and 56 centimeters long, including a tail that can reach 10 to 13 centimeters. Despite weighing about 2.3 kilograms, their thick coat of brown fur makes them appear heavier.
The platypus has claws on both its front and hind feet, but its webs can be extended beyond the claws. When walking on land or digging in the ground, the platypus folds its webs against its palms.
These animals make their homes in burrows along the banks of streams, which can be as long as 26 meters. With the exception of mother platypuses and their young, each platypus lives in its own burrow.
During the mating season, the female platypus constructs a nest of leaves and grass at the end of her burrow, blocking the entrance with dirt before laying her eggs.
Female platypuses typically lay one to three eggs at a time, which have a leathery shell and measure about 1.3 centimeters in diameter.
After around 10 days, the eggs hatch, and the young platypuses remain in their mother's burrow for approximately four months, feeding on her milk.
