Innledning
In Carolyn A. Drake's "Pill Pusher," we meet a weary pharmacist narrating her monotonous workday. As she serves customers, she finds herself irritated by an impatient woman, hastily judging her as a stereotypical "soccer mom" based on appearance and behavior.
The narrator grapples with job dissatisfaction and questions her career choice in pharmacy, feeling remorseful for dispensing addictive medications.
However, amidst her reflection, a poignant encounter with customers enduring heartbreaking hardships shifts her perspective.
She begins to see her profession as an opportunity to aid those in need, instilling a newfound sense of purpose and compassion in her work.
Utdrag
In a poignant tale, the narrator grapples with her existential dilemma, torn by the haunting choice of a career in pharmaceuticals.
Her conscience bears the weight of guilt, as she administers drugs that she perceives as no different from legalized drug dealing (l.13).
The profound emotions conveyed through pathos accentuate the overwhelming anxiety she endures, having invested a substantial $70,000 in her education only to drown in debt, trapped in a life of unfulfillment (l.15).
The narrative takes on a pessimistic and ironic tone, skillfully woven with negative adjectives, such as her weary lips (l.1) and the faux-friendly customer service smile (l.3), both aptly mirroring her discontent with her chosen profession.
Logos and ethos are present in the text, but they are not as important as pathos. Examples of logos would be the usage of medical jargon with the mentioning of various types of medication, “Cialis and Zoloft and Oxycodone” and illnesses such as “leukemia and stomach ulcer”.
This usage of logos gives the narrator authenticity and also strengthens her ethos as it makes her appear knowledgeable and talented in her field of work despite feeling discontent with her job. Abbreviations such as ADHD and PTA further emphasize the narrator’s ethos.
The combination of negative, ironic and pathos fueled language gives a very personal connection between the reader and the narrator.
This language style has the intention of being relatable and perhaps helping someone who finds themselves in a similar situation of confusion and unknowingness with direction in life.
