Innledning
Mariam was born into a life of hardship and neglect. Being an unwanted child, she was often seen as a burden by her mother, Nana.
At the young age of five, Mariam heard the word "harami" for the first time, a word that would haunt her for years to come.
As she waited for her father, Jalil, to visit on their weekly Thursday meeting, Mariam grew restless. Looking for a way to pass the time, she climbed onto a chair and reached for her mother's cherished Chinese tea set.
Unfortunately, Mariam's excitement got the best of her and she dropped the sugar bowl, which shattered on the floorboards.
Nana's anger was palpable as she scolded Mariam, calling her a "clumsy little harami." This moment only served to reinforce Mariam's feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness in the eyes of those around her.
