Innledning
Dystopia. A society with criminality, chaos, and injustice. This is a popular genre to both write and read about in the modern society.

People likes to read about ruined and unfair societies where citizens must fight to stay alive.

One can hear about these kinds of societies in books, series, and movies such as “The Hunger Games” (Collins, 2008), “Don’t look up” (McKay, 2021) and “The Society” (Keyser, 2019).

In this literature one can among other things read about death, murder, and powerful dictators with evil intentions. This is a popular kind of literature, but what is the actual purpose of reading it?

Utdrag
“What if?”-questions describe possible events or scenarios that could occur in the future, and what would happen if they occurred.

In the movie “Don’t look up” (McKay, 2021) many of these questions are asked throughout the entire movie.

The movie is about a dystopic society where the leaders have all the power and hides crucial and vital information about a planet-killing comet aiming for earth.

Instead of saving the entire population, the president priorities valuable metal inside of the comet despite the astrologists’ recommendations.

In the movie questions like “What if a huge comet was aiming for earth?” or “What if the state was hiding information from us?” are asked, but in the movie the citizens do not ask questions early enough to save the planet.

This is an example of why questioning the choices made in the society by the authorities is very important. If the citizens of the society in “Don’t look up” were more prepared and asked these questions earlier on, they could have had a greater chance at surviving.

By asking “What if?”-questions and by thinking about how one should react if something similar occurred here, one could prevent disasters and problems like these from happening.

Dystopic literature describes worst-case-scenarios that could possibly take place now or in the future.

This kind of literature can be pessimistic, depressing and aggravating to read, but that is exactly the reason why one should read it.
