Utdrag
“Review of The Great Gatsby” was written by a critic, published in the British newspaper The Guardian. Throughout the review, the author’s language reveals his personal opinion about the film.
There are several examples showing this through the review. First off, the author quite frankly expresses his opinion directly in the very beginning of the text; in which he says: “Baz Luhrmann’s version, while good and bad in parts, is mainly a misconceived venture.”
He leaves no doubt about his opinion on the film, as he states that it contains both good and bad parts, however it is mainly a misunderstood venture.
Secondly, the author’s constant use of adjectives throughout the review also indicates his opinion on The Great Gatsby.
Describing Tobey Maguire’s version of Nick Carraway, he for example says: “(…) Nick Carrawat is (…) misdirected, playing Nick as gauche, uncomfortable, unsophisticated, childlike,”.
The critic starts off by stating that the character is misdirected, and follows up by describing him using the adjectives gauche, uncomfortable, unsophisticated and childlike.
This clearly gives away his opinion of the acting of the film, as it tells the reader that he considers it “incorrect”, based on his view of the character in the book.
His use of these adjectives; emotional vocabulary, tells the reader about his view of the film.
Even though the negatively charged words in this case are used to describe a character in the film, rather than the film itself, they nevertheless communicate a certain negativity connected to the film.
Furthermore, adjectives are used in order to describe the book, in which the author says: “Fitzgerals’d exquisite prose”.
As the critic uses the positively charged adjective exquisite in order to describe the book, this creates a contrast.
Whereas the book is described using words with positive associations, the author mainly uses words with negative associations (such as shown further up), in order to describe the film.
This again shows the opinion of the critic, who clearly prefers the book. Lastly, the use of figurative language clearly reveals the opinion of the critic.
In the second paragraph, he for example says: “This is a film that tramples like an elephant in a china store on Fitzgerald’s exquisite prose,”.
