Utdrag
Through Throughout the story, Dr. Harper remains somewhat of a mysterious figure, known only as a psychiatrist. The narrative mentions his tan coat, galoshes in the closet, and his pipe-smoking habit (page 23, line 16).
Rita Billings, Lester's wife and mother of Denny, Shirl, and Andy, is portrayed as the more overbearing and caring parent.
She suggests keeping the oldest son's bottle and installing a nightlight, but she also obediently follows Lester's decisions, even when they seem unreasonable. For instance, when Lester moves their daughter into the deceased Denny's crib, Rita does not protest (page 24, line 35).
The boogeyman is a supernatural monster that appears to have caused the deaths of Lester Billings' children. It is described with long claws (page 27, lines 69-73).
Tragically, Lester's first two children died mysteriously while alone in their bedrooms. Before their deaths, they cried out "Boogeyman!" and the closet door was found slightly ajar, despite Lester being certain he had closed it (page 26, line 56).
The shocking revelation at the end of the story is that the boogeyman had been disguised as Dr. Harper throughout the entire therapy session.
When Lester leaves the session room, it becomes clear that the boogeyman had been posing as the psychiatrist all along.
