As a teenager living in this present year, I feel inclined to speak on the ongoing issues affecting this generation. One being scarily confronting statistics of eating disorders that are continuously rising.

Of course, mental disorders have always been around, even when they were not recognized as real problems, and we are very fortunate to live in a society where mental illnesses are not only recognized but constantly advocated for.

Arguably, this might be the sole reason numbers of clinically diagnosed eating disorder sufferers are on the rise, therefor meaning it is essentially a good thing.

However, did you know only 1 in 5 people who suffer with disordered eating habits seek medical help, ana 1 in 3 people who seek medical intervention aren’t provided with the correct help needed to make a full recovery?

Well, you might be asking now: What does this have to do with the media? At this day and time diet culture is so predominant and you cannot escape from it.

In January especially, people are expected to make “new year’s resolutions” and “start getting their summer body back after Christmas” for example.

Its impossible to escape the expectation to diet and work out, and young adolescents specifically are susceptible to trying to live up to these standards, when their bodies are just not meant for that.

At the age of eleven, twelve, thirteen, etc. years old. YOU ARE GROWING. You are not supposed to be focused on food and body image and calories.

It’s not all new though, unrealistically skinny girls have been plastered on the fronts of magazines for ages, pages filled up with picture perfect model girls with their sparkling white teeth, clear skin, slender figures. It’s just that now those girls are inescapable.

We´re constantly told that we are fine as we are, that we should love ourselves and not change ourselves, but how can we when these digitality enhanced girls and distorted ideas of 2pretty” are waved in our faces at any given moment? If you´re still asking how the media is promoting eating disorders at this point, try to understand.
