Among the myriad challenges we face on this planet, one of the most significant and pressing is undoubtedly food waste.

Astonishingly, an average individual discards approximately 15-20% of their food each year, contributing to an alarming annual food wastage of over 700,000 tons in Denmark alone.

This squandered food in Europe could easily nourish a staggering 200 million people. Moreover, with the world's population projected to reach 9 billion by 2050, we must increase food production by a staggering 70% to meet the burgeoning demands.

One crucial step is to utilize the food we already have before heading out to shop. By planning our meals and making the most of what's available at home, we can minimize unnecessary purchases and avoid adding to the waste.

Additionally, opting to buy food close to its expiration date can be a smart choice, as it not only saves money but also prevents otherwise edible items from being discarded.

Creating a shopping list beforehand can work wonders in curbing impulsive purchases and ensuring we only buy what we truly need.

Grocery shopping frequently but in smaller quantities can also lead to less wastage, as it allows us to stay mindful of our consumption patterns and reduces the likelihood of food spoiling before it can be used.

In today's digital age, technological innovations come to our aid. Apps like "Too Good to Go," "For Resten," and "Mad Skal Spises" are revolutionizing the way we handle surplus food.

"Too Good to Go" alone has saved an impressive 4,161,162 meals, leading to a remarkable 10,403 tons of CO2 saved in Denmark.

However, to address the issue at its core, I believe legislation should be enacted to hold supermarkets accountable for their food waste.
