"Cora Unashamed" is a short story penned by Langston Hughes, which revolves around the protagonist Cora Jenkins. She is an African American woman and the sole black member of the Melton community.

Cora works as a housekeeper for the affluent Studevant family, where she takes care of their youngest daughter, Jessie. Their bond is strong, as Cora sees Jessie as a substitute for her own daughter, who tragically passed away at the same age as Jessie.

However, the plot takes a heart-wrenching turn when Jessie falls in love and becomes pregnant. Unfortunately, her mother vehemently opposes the pregnancy and forces Jessie to undergo an abortion. This tragic decision leads to Jessie's death, leaving Cora devastated.

During Jessie's funeral, Cora decides to speak out about the true circumstances surrounding Jessie's passing.

This courageous act results in her forcible removal from the funeral, and it becomes the turning point for Cora. Driven by her pain and frustration, she decides to leave her position with the Studevant family.

Why do black people always seem to be overrepresented in America's academic underachievement, teenage pregnancy, poverty, chronic unemployment, alcoholism, and drug addiction?

The root cause of this issue is racial oppression. Throughout history, society has not made it easy for people of color, especially black women.

Despite the abolition of slavery, black individuals still endure significant hardships. Poverty, racism, and police violence continue to affect many in the black community, and these themes are evident in the short story "Cora Unashamed."
