Innledning
In literature, it is a lot of themes and subjects. You can also learn about history, culture and social knowledge.
The novel “Oliver Twist” takes for example place in London in the 1800- century. London has changed since then, and you can see the differences clearly in the text.
“Brick Lane” is also a novel where you gain about history and the culture. “Brick Lane” is a text from the 1900-century, and the society is therefore not different, but you learn about how they live in the country.
In the novels there is themes like arranged marriage, multiculturalism, friendship, poverty, betrayal and crime. The subjects are important, because they are telling the reader about the society and the culture.
The background the characters are also giving information. Do you for example learn more about history and social knowledge than culture in the texts, or are you getting just as much information?

People in all society classes were shoved into the streets. The poor who did not have it well, wanted to steel from the rich. Because of that, the streets were dangerous.
Crime and betrayal was very normal back then. In “Oliver Twist” you see his life from his point of view, the history, and how he changed his life. The subjects is relevant, and shows us how the society was in London in the 1800-century.
The subject makes a novel interesting. If the only theme in the text “Oliver Twist” for example were love, you will not learn so much about the history and the culture in the country.
Love is between to persons. The text will therefore tell more about the feelings, than the society. The background to the main characters has a lot to say.
If Nacneen in the story “Brick Lane” was born in Norway and could find a man by her self, you would learn that Norway has freedom of expression and that the country does not have so many social and economic differences.
But since she was born in India we got to learn about arranged marriage and multiculturalism.
