Utdrag
In 1791, the Legion of the United States was established as the first trained American army, but was disbanded in 1796.

Its creation was prompted by concerns of the Continental Congress regarding conflicts with Native Americans.

Prior to this, in 1775, colonists and the Continental Congress formed the Continental Army under the leadership of George Washington to fight and ultimately win the Revolutionary War against Great Britain.

The Continental Army received crucial assistance from allies including the French, Dutch, and Spanish.

The pivotal battle at Yorktown led to the recognition of America's independence with the signing of the Treaty of Paris.

19th century
In 1812, British forces landed on the east coast while American troops were preoccupied with a failed invasion of Canada.

Taking advantage of the situation, the British proceeded to burn down the newly-built capital of Washington D.C.

However, the Regular Army, led by General Winfield Scott and Jacob Brown, emerged victorious against the British army in the Niagara campaign of 1814.

The Mexican-American War from 1846 to 1848 was a significant event for both the United States and Mexico.

Democrats used the concept of Manifest Destiny, the belief that America was destined to expand across the continent, as a pretext for skirmishes and battles against Native Americans, as well as the war against Mexico.

The formation of the Confederate States of America by most southern states in 1861 marked the beginning of the American Civil War when Confederate troops fired on Union-held Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina.

For the first two years, the Confederate forces held the upper hand, but after the pivotal battles at Gettysburg in the east and Vicksburg in the west, Union troops waged a brutal campaign through Confederate territory.

The Confederate surrender finally took place at Appomattox Courthouse in April 1865. The Union's superior numbers and industrial strength eventually turned the tide in their favor.

The American Civil War claimed the lives of 620,000 soldiers, resulting in the death of 8% of all white males aged 13 to 43, making it the deadliest conflict in American history.

20th century
Between 1916 and 1917, the United States military engaged in conflict with Mexican rebels and federal troops following an attack on Columbus, New Mexico by a prominent rebel leader.

In 1917, the United States joined forces with Britain, France, Russia, and other allies in World War I.

This marked a significant turning point in the war, as the addition of American troops and resources helped to shift the balance of power in favor of the Allies.

The involvement of the United States was also instrumental in bringing about the eventual defeat of the Central Powers, which led to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles and the end of the war.
